The town is famous for its association with Moliere, a travelling actor who brought his troupe of players to entertain the local nobles and people in the 16th century. He stayed for many years and since Pezenas has become famous for its association with the playwright. It is a magnificent town steeped in history, from its chateau to its 16th century 'ghetto' area.

LocalThe climate in this part of France gives us 300 days of sunshine per year on average, with summer temperatures often in the mid 30's. Even in January frosts are rare and daytime temperatures average between 12-15 degrees.
Pezenas celebrates its association with Moliere all year round but particularly at the festival known as the Mirondella des Arts in June and July, celebrating with many events not just those associated with Moliere. The cobbled streets of the old town come to life with street perfomers, artists as well as travelling players offering impromptu acts and plays. In the evenings there are many live events, some of which have to be booked through the local tourist office in advance in the Place Gambetta. These include classical as well as popular concerts and plays, fetes and firework displays. Jazz is often found on show in one or two of the local bars in the evenings.
The town is full of craft and art shops as well as having an excellent although small museum. It has one of the best shows of 'Santons' - the small wooden figures depicting the scene of the Nativity at Xmas that we have seen. There are also many antique shops on the main road into Pezenas from Beziers and the coast. The town has numerous bars and restaurants as well as supermarkets.
Yet Pezenas is set in the middle of the largest vineyard in the world and any short drive into the countryside will reveal the large chateau and domaines as well as the perched villages of the Midi. Don't hesitate to visit them should you wish to buy wine which is often of excellent quality these days.
Along the coast which can be reached in about 15minutes are situated a number of resorts and fishing ports, as well as the large port of Sete, known as the Venice of France, with its many canals. From Sete travelling back along the beach road towards Agde you will pass along a sandy spit of beach measuring some 15 kilometers long with hardly a building in site as it is classified as a natural reserve between the Sea and the Bassin de Thau famous for its oysters. The small fishing ports of Marseillan, Meze and Bouzigues have a number of restaurants and bars for eating, and the Canal du Midi is also here, having crossed France from the Atlantic Ocean it can arrives at the Mediterranean at Agde, originally a Greek settlement, which now sits on the Herault river.
Inland there is the Haut Languedoc with its mountains and steep gorges to explore such as the Gorge D'Heric as well as the spa towns such as Lamalou Les Bains. There are also 3 golf courses within 40 minutes of Pezenas - the nearest being 20 minutes away at St Thomas near Beziers. |
